It comes with a lot of commitments and responsibilities. It is important for every homeowner to make sure that the house is completely safe and pleasant for the pets. Initially, when the pet is small, they can turn the house upside-down but when they grow up, you learn to become accustomed to its behavior and needs and they become a family member for you.
Following are the ways to make your house pet-friendly:
- Close the lids
Make sure the lid of the dustbins and toilet seats are close. Sometimes there are old foods and small indigestible pieces of waste materials that can be harmful to animals if swallowed.
- Opt for right flooring
Dogs and cats love to run here and there and if you have wooden flooring at your home, it may cause them a serious injury because the wooden flooring is slippery. Go for Vinyl flooring or cork flooring to make your house pet-friendly.
- Keep things out of their reach
Go for closed storage your homes. Cats and dogs may drag the things kept on shelves and eat things from it which may present a choking hazard. It is best if all things are kept at a place they cannot get hold of.
- Keep your house clean
If you have cats and dogs at your place, you may find their hair on beds and couch no matter how often you vacuum them. So, pick out sofa covers that are washable and you can take them off easily.
- Away from direct heat
Aquariums should always be kept away from direct sunlight to put a stop to the growth of algae in it. Also, when you are doing a pest control treatment, painting or polishing your furniture, keep the fish tank away as the harsh chemicals in the air may kill the fishes. Regularly check whether all the electrical equipment of the tank are working properly or not.
Birdcages should also be kept away from rain and sun’s heat.
- Keep dangerous plants away
Be careful with the plants especially if you have a dog as your pet. Most common household plants like jasmine, poinsettia, castor bean etc. are poisonous for dogs. If you have these plants at your house, make sure they are out of your dog’s reach.
- Place delicate things at the height
Dogs are cute and loyal. They are like little babies when you get them home. Puppies are full of energy, always curious and love to jump around. So, keep all the delicate things like glass items and lighted candles away or at least three feet above the floor.
- Give them toys
If you don’t want your pets to chew your pillows, sofas, or any other thing, give them their toys. For dogs, toys are mentally and physically stimulating and assist in fulfilling dog’s emotional needs.
- Be cautious with the cleaning agents
Avoid strong antiseptic floor cleaning agents for mopping as pets tend to lick the floors and can ingest it.
- Avoid wide grills
If your windows or balconies have wide grills, get them narrowed because your pets can easily get through them.
- Rugs
Remove all the rugs from your home, if you have cat or dogs at your home. The rugs can turn into a breeding ground of fleas for your pet.
